Niacin is a natural alternative to cholesterol lowering drugs. Niacin is healthy for the body, whereas the popular "statin" drugs for cholesterol have side effects including liver toxicity and inhibiting co-enzyme Q10.
- Dr. David Williams

The same irrational statin drugs used to block cholesterol manufacture also block coQ10 production thus contributing to potential heart failure since coQ10 is essential in all the little powerhouses of all cells, the mitochondria where energy for all the needs of all body cells is produced.

Lower your cholesterol safely with:
1. red yeast extract (from Chinese medicine)
2. guggul (an Ayurvedic herbal medicine).
Red yeast extract decreases production of cholesterol in the body. Goggul improves the elimination of cholesterol from the body.

VIAGRA & THE RED MEAT CONNECTION

What you Need to Know

By Lee Hitchcox and Menkit Prince

We live in a society where large numbers of American men are clearly not happy with their sexual performance. Health magazines are now awash in ads for male potency aids: Horney Goat Weed, Yohimbe, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and Muira Puana (Potency Wood). And sales of Viagra skyrocketed to 1 billion dollars last year. But is Viagra the ideal solution for impotence?

How Viagra Works

By inhibiting the enzyme PDE 5 (phosphodesterase), a chemical is released that increases blood flow to the sexual organs causing an erection. The drug doesn't cause an erection or increase libido unless one is already sexually excited.

The Miracle Sex Drug?

On her second date Jane, a nurse, opens her handbag and produces some Viagra pills for Tony, her new boyfriend. She explains that these pills will help lead them to ecstatic sex. She is a modern woman who knows exactly what she wants. Tony, being 50 years old, aware of his waning sexual prowess and wanting to please her, enthusiastically pops the pills. It works - he feels like a 20 year old again! Unfortunately, a year later, Tony notices he is unable to have an erection without using Viagra - his condition is worse than before he started taking this drug.

The Truth about Viagra

Perhaps Jane neglected to alert Tony of the potential dangers associated with Viagra. Since its approval in March 2000 by the FDA, 130 Americans have died - 77 from coronary heart problems such as heart attacks. Others have suffered strokes and non-fatal heart attacks as a direct result of using Viagra. Pharmaceutical companies warn men not to take Viagra without a prescription from a doctor because of the many risks, especially for men taking nitroglycerin, which is a heart drug that lowers high blood pressure. Ironically, it is the men who are suffering from heart problems who need Viagra the most (see following) yet they are the very ones who cannot take it!

The British Medical Journal reports cases of men taking Viagra who maintained painful erections for up to 24 hours after ejaculation (called priapism). This totally unnatural occurrence damages the tiny valves in the penis veins, leading to permanent impotence. This condition would be more likely to strike young men in their prime who do not need Viagra than men who truly suffer from impotence.

Since Viagra interferes with the ability to distinguish between blue and green, pilots are prohibited from taking it for 12 hours before flying. Imagine being on a plane with 500 people which crashed because the pilot recently took Viagra and could not differentiate between the various colors on the plane's control panel in the cockpit and land the plane safely!

Other side-effects include splitting headaches, which are caused by the surge of blood to the meninges (the sheath protecting the brain). Additionally about 10% of men suffer from blurred vision, decreased tolerance to bright lights, stomach upset, nasal congestion, diarrhea and urinary tract infection. Facial flushing where the blood vessels to the face dilate causing redness, is also common.

At the very least, the long-term use of Viagra can leave men unable to achieve erections without its use, thereby creating life-long dependence. So for short-term benefits, there is a long-term price. It would be wise to think twice before trying it just because your friends recommend it, especially if you truly don't need it and are merely trying to enhance your sexual performance.

The Physical Cause of Impotence

We will start with an elementary anatomy lesson. The penis, clitoris and nipples are comprised of erectile tissue. Blood enters through arteries and leaves through veins. When sexually excited, veins contract which restricts blood from leaving the erectile tissue. An erection is nothing more than engorged blood (how romantic!) However when the arteries are clogged (due to a diet high in saturated fats), or the heart is weak, blood can't flow to the genitals, causing the embarrassing problem of impotence.

Heart Disease and Impotence

Heart disease and impotence are related because the heart's function is to circulate blood and as we explained earlier, an erection is nothing more than engorged blood. Medical studies clearly show that a diet high in saturated fats leads to clogged arteries and heart disease (1). In our society, it's normal for clogged arteries to begin in early childhood. Several studies show fatty streaks in the arteries of American children by ten years of age (2). It's also normal for blood cholesterol levels to rise with age. Other studies show that following the guidelines of the American Heart Association i.e.

30% fat - 300 mg of daily cholesterol - 4 eggs per week

does not stop the progression of heart disease (3).

Even if a man survives a heart attack (75% of men survive their first heart attack), his heart is never the same - he will be disabled in some way for the rest of his life. The first signs of impotence in a man could signal impending heart disease, our nation's number one killer.

In the same way that heart disease can be prevented through diet, so too can impotence.

Meat Affects Kidneys

In this culture, Americans are obsessed with getting enough protein which explains why everybody is eating so much meat. According to Chinese Acupuncture theory, the kidneys relate to sexual desire and ability. However animal protein is hard on the kidneys because it must be broken down into nitrogen waste products (urea, uric acid, creatinine, ammonia) which are excreted in the urine. Over a lifetime, the kidney tissue deteriorates from the increase in flow and pressure. By age 80 most Americans have lost 33-50% of their kidney function and excess protein appears to be the prime cause (4). This is why people with kidney disease are placed on low-protein diets. Since kidneys relate to sexual desire/ability and, as we have demonstrated, eating meat detrimentally affects kidneys, sexual function is weakened as a result of eating meat.

Where do Saturated Fats come from?

Since saturated fats clog arteries and impair heart function, they directly cause impotence. All fats from animal products are saturated. Red meat contains saturated fat. Dairy products (such as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, cream, ice cream) are around 56% fat which is even more saturated than lard at 42%. Also tropical oils such as coconut and palm oil are saturated. There are no other saturated fats in the vegetable kingdom.

It's ironical that men historically have always believed that eating red meat would make them more virile. As it turns out, the opposite is true in the long run.

Red Meat Consumption "On The Rise"

No pun intended! Americans are now tearing into beef like there's no tomorrow. Since 1997, the number of U.S. steakhouses nearly tripled according to market research firm NPD Group, Inc. Tyson Foods, the poultry giant, this year agreed to buy the nation's largest red meat processor for $3.2 billion. And Taco Bell formed a partnership with the National Cattleman's Beef Association to ensure supplies for its new steak burrito. During the past two years, demand for beef rose 6% according to the University of Missouri. A recent national Harris Poll revealed that 96% of Americans now eat beef. Small wonder Viagra sales are soaring.

How to Avoid or Reverse Impotence

A diet rich in whole foods from the plant kingdom (whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, tofu, nuts and seeds) on the other hand is not saturated and does not contribute to clogged arteries, high LDL cholesterol, heart disease and impotence. Dairy products are the most mucous-forming foods and coat internal organs and mucous membranes with a layer of mucous, making the whole system sluggish and less sensitive. Sensitivity helps one be a better lover, regardless of whether you are male or female.

Who would ever believe that eating a simple diet of whole grains, vegetables, beans, fruits, nuts and seeds could lead to a long and satisfying sex life? Yet the long-lived societies such as the Hunza people of the Kashmir Valley and the Vilcalbambas of Ecuador Valley have been eating this way for hundreds of years and not only do they avoid degenerative disease (such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis etc.) and obesity but they also live a long time - reputedly up to 120 and 140 years -and they are still sexually active AT 100 YEARS OF AGE! These people have no need of Viagra or any sex stimulants.

It's sad that instead of making more intelligent, educated dietary choices, Americans today are not eating less but more saturated foods and using Viagra (with all its attendant side effects) to deal with the consequences of declining sexual ability. But there is a better way. To live a long and healthy life, free from degenerative diseases and impotence, simply eat the same foods of people with a track record for doing exactly that.

So the next time you long for the taste and texture of a thick, juicy, succulent steak and hear voices call to you from the meat counter ask yourself what kind of lover do you want to be over age 40? If the answer is vibrant and exciting, head on to the fresh produce and bulk grain aisle instead!

Whey protein improves heart health:
- lower blood pressure
- vascular relaxation
- lower LDL cholesterol
- higher HDL cholesterol
- reduced stickiness of red blood cells

Cycling 30 - 40 minutes daily improves sexual function. Cycling increases blood flow in the pelvic area and organs by as much as 75%. The result is a dramatic improvement in sexual performance according to a survey of sexual partners. There are no negative side effects from cycling, only side benefits. Get yourself a stationary bicycle now!

Green oats (avena sativa) and nettles (urtica dioica) improve sexual sensation and performance in both men and women.

For the male to have an erection, nitric oxide is necessary for the blood vessels to dilate. Viagra works by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down nitric oxide. However, there is an alternative that is cheaper and has no side effects. The amino acid L-arginine breaks down into nitric oxide, costs little, has no side effects and works just as well.

A good source of L-arginine is whey powder.

Whey protein improves heart health:
- lower blood pressure
- vascular relaxation
- lower LDL cholesterol
- higher HDL cholesterol

Humming can increase nitric oxide. Exercise also increases nitric oxide.

Male sexual desire depends on testosterone and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Eating lecithin will increase acetylcholine levels in men and women. A side benefit of increasing acetylcholine is that your mind will function better and memory improves.

Exercise for better sex.

Conventionally produced beef in the United States contains measurable residues of injected anabolic steroids, plus natural and synthetic estrogen, testosterone and progesterone.

Men born to women who eat beef produce less sperm. If the woman eats lots of beef, there is a nearly 20% chance her male child will be virtually infertile due to low sperm production.

December 13, 2001

If you don't have a stationary bicycle, this may be the holiday season to ask for one.

An Italian study presented recently at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions found that bicycling helped treat sexual dysfunction in men with congestive heart failure, or CHF. This finding is important for a couple of reasons.

First, many men with CHF and other cardiovascular problems are desperate for advice on how to deal with erectile dysfunction. This is a common side effect of most cardiac drugs as well as of CHF itself. Second, patients with CHF are in a double bind because they are often prescribed drugs containing nitrates, which interact poorly with Viagra (sildenafil), the leading drug for erectile dysfunction. (Don't even consider taking these two together: Nitrates and Viagra can be a lethal combination.)

Research Specifics

The study involved 59 men with CHF, all in their mid- to late 50s. Thirty of the men rode stationary bikes in a supervised setting three times per week for eight weeks; the other 29 did not exercise.

Both at the beginning and the end of the study, patients and their sexual partners completed questionnaires about their sexual activity. Across the board, the men who cycled reported much-improved sexual function, and this was confirmed by their partners. The men who did not exercise experienced no change.

The researchers speculated that regular exercise worked by widening the lining in all major blood vessels. This is similar to what Viagra does, but exercise accomplishes it much more safely.

The Other Half of the Story

I think blood vessel widening is just part of the story, because exercise also increases your body's production of growth hormone, the "master" hormone that improves cardiovascular function and body composition, among its myriad benefits. (For more on growth hormone, see the March 2001 issue of The Sinatra Health Report.) Furthermore, exercise improves all other hormonal interactions, including the production of testosterone - a hormone essential for both men and women.

So, to boost performance in all areas of life - including the bedroom - you need to exercise regularly. And this includes you women.

Although the Italian study was conducted with men, its results are equally applicable to women. I can vouch for this based on my many years of practice. I've seen countless female patients improve dramatically when they incorporated regular exercise into their lives.

If you're planning to get started with an exercise program (and I hope you do, whether you have CHF or not), please see your doctor first for his or her opinion on how to proceed. Then put a stationary bicycle - or, equally good, a treadmill - on your holiday wish list, and see what happens.

Happy holidays,

Stephen Sinatra, M.D.

P.S. Men, if you're having trouble in the bedroom, there are several nutritional supplements I recommend that can help, including L-arginine. But they work better in tandem with exercise, not instead of it.

Considering Bypass Surgery?

Then consider this:

1. Within 7 years, 80% of bypass arteries are blocked again.

2. Up to one third of bypass patients suffer a stroke or other brain damage.

3. 5% of patients die during the bypass surgery.

Bypass surgery is a very expensive and damaging temporary measure. It is not a long term cure. About 250,000 Americans have bypass surgery each year. At a cost of $25,000 to $40,000 per surgery, this is BIG BUSINESS.

Low cost alternatives to bypass surgery exist (a combination of low fat vegetarian diet, non-smoking, exercise and meditation can reverse even serious blockage), and these low cost alternatives offer a PERMANENT CURE without the damaging side effects of bypass surgery.

"Except for brain surgery, none is more dangerous and risky than heart surgery." - Dr. David Blyweiss

Bypass surgery belongs in the medical HALL OF SHAME.

From Dr. Robert Jay Rowen's Second Opinion April 2002.

Cure Your Hypertension

One of the main problems with conventional therapy is it does not address the cause of elevated blood pressure. It just treats the symptoms. Years ago, articles appeared clearly showing the introduction of sodium (salt) into the endothelium (the inner lining of the blood vessels) as the principle factor in the development of hypertension. Salt, and the water it carries, was shown to be a major underlying force in the swelling of the vascular lining, which would require greater pressure (hypertension) to pump blood through the swollen vascular system. And none of the prescription blood pressure pills treats this cause.

As I mentioned earlier, there's a simple treatment that's extremely effective, doesn't use drugs, and promises to get millions of people off these destructive pills. In fact, what you are about to read is so deadly to the establishment, that despite its incredibly profound truth and faultless methodology, major medical journals refused to publish this data. Why? Because it would cost the drug companies, which advertise in these journals, billions of dollars. And that's no exaggeration!

Alan Goldhammer, DC of True North Health, in Rohnert Park, California, took in 174 self-referred adults, each admitted for in-patient care of hypertension and other problems over a 12-year period from 1985-1997.

In order to participate in the study, patients had to have a systolic BP of at least 140, and a diastolic BP of at least 90, or both. The initial BP average for the group was 159.1/89.2 and the average weight was 78.4kg (approximately 210 lbs) with body mass index of 29.

The water-only fast was administered for periods ranging from four to 28 days. The only intake was distilled water (minimum of 40 ox daily). The patients' physical activity was limited, as it can cause significant energy expenditure (this can be dangerous without food to replace the lost energy). Electrolytes and other blood parameters were also carefully monitored, and researchers followed all accepted protocols for fasting.

The results of this study were nothing less than phenomenal! The average BP of the group dropped to 127.4/77.7, and to an astounding 121.9/75.7 after the physicians slowly re-introduced food. At the same time, body weight dropped an average of 12.1 pounds, and body mass index dropped from 28.7 to 26.5. The biggest surprise was that the worst cases of hypertension actually saw the biggest reductions in their BP! The worse the hypertension, the greater the correction. An amazing 89 percent of the subjects became normal! The final average BP of the entire group was 117.5/78.7.

All patients on anti-hypertensive medication at the onset of the treatments were off their drugs by the conclusion of the fast!

You would think that hunger would be a major problem for the patients, but after the second or third day, your body naturally dulls the hunger sensation. And even better, there were no complications reported at any time in the study except for occasional mild nausea and temporary low blood pressure.

At the time of the published report, the researchers had followed up on 42 of the 174 original subjects over a period of 27 weeks after discharge. The average BP was 123/77 in these 42, suggesting these results are either permanent or sustainable for many months.

Folks, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see why several big-time medical journals refused publication of this data. It strikes a silver stake into the heart of all the pharmaceutical precepts of hypertension treatment.

This therapy is so effective, it more than doubled the results of our best therapy to date, and fixed the problem at the source!

Dr. Goldhammer adds that those individuals who have adhered to a vegan follow-up diet have remained free from hypertension for as long as he has followed them. He feels that the addition of small amounts of fresh fish or fowl, up to three ounces twice a week, does not have any adverse effects in the maintenance of normal blood pressure, once corrected. I think you could probably add a few ounces of grass-fed beef, as well.

Action to Take

(1) I do believe in fasting, having repeatedly seen dramatic results over many years. However, I do not, under any circumstances recommend a lengthy (more than one day), unsupervised water fast. I've watched people do fresh juice fasting with ease and  never a problem, often for two or three weeks. Juices contain minerals and vitamins, which sharply reduce mineral imbalances, which could occur during a prolonged water fast. A terrific book on the subject is How to Keep Slim, Healthy, and Young with Juice Fasting by Paavo Airola.

(2) If your blood pressure is higher than 160/100, I suggest a supervised water fast, such as the program run by the study's authors or those well trained in water fasting. I will admit, a water fast does not sound pleasant. However, the thought of hypertension complications is far less appealing.

(3) If fasting causes your blood pressure to drop, make sure you work with your doctor to reduce your drug dependence.

(4) If you don't currently suffer from high blood pressure, a periodic one-day juice fast will help prevent this deadly problem. Once or twice a month should be plenty. I also think simply adding more water to your diet will help considerably.

Hypertension is not a lifetime disease, as the medical pundits would have you believe. It's a reversible disorder, brought on by a bad diet, lack of exercise, stress, and a modern "civilized" lifestyle. There are many other treatments you can add to this therapy to further ensure your health. I'll be reporting on these in future issues.

For more information on water fasting, please contact True North Health at 6010 Commerce Blvd. #152, Rohnert park, CA 94928; 707-586-5555, Fax: 707-586-5554, or visit the Web site: www.healthpromoting.com . True North Health has been given a major contract from a large Bay area labor union to treat members with this program. The union believes that paying for the program for members will dramatically improve their health and reduce long-term health costs by curing hypertension. It can do the same for you!

Considering Chelation Therapy? Why not try ORAL CHELATION!

"Oral chelation is not a new process. In fact, it originated in 1893 with Alfred Werner, a French-Swiss chemist, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of chelation. Patients who have been helped by the chelation process - which targets the entire 75,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body - number in the hundreds of thousands. Yet strangely enough, many physicians have never heard of it. And many believe it's a new treatment. They are very wrong and out of touch!" - Dr. David Blyweiss

Dr. Blyweiss offers an oral chelation product called Vessel & Artery Health that is not expensive. The product contains Trisodium EDTA, Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Oxide, Aspartic Acid, Zinc Dioxide, Manganese Sulphate, Selenium Dioxide and Bioperine. The best deal is a six month supply for less than $150. You can order it from Nature's Wellness Rx, P.O. Box 198513, West Palm Beach, FL 33419-8513 U.S.A. 1-800-339-7462 or 561-881-0892, fax 1-561-881-1451.

Dr. Blyweiss offers a full refund if you are not satisfied. Contact Nature's Wellness Rx for more information. This product is so economical that it can be taken from time to time in order to help PREVENT problems. Many people die as a result of their FIRST heart attack. PREVENTION was their only option.

Vedic Medicine Can Reverse Heart Disease, New Study Proves by Karla Gale / Reuters Health News (via MEDLINEplus)
One year of a multi-component program based on traditional Indian medicine was able to reverse the thickening of blood vessel walls known as atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, in healthy older people, a new report shows. The program, based on the 4,000-year-old tradition of Vedic medicine, included Transcendental Meditation, antioxidant herbal supplements, a diet low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables, yoga exercises designed to reduce stress, and walking. Participants meditated twice daily for 20 minutes, and walked for 30 minutes a day. This is the first time, lead author Dr. Robert Schneider of the Center for National Medicine and Prevention in Fairfield, Iowa, told Reuters Health, that a combination mind-body technique has been shown to reverse atherosclerosis. The findings are published in the American Journal of Cardiology for April 15, 2002.

Indo-Mediterranean Diet Prevents Heart Disease

I want to bring to your attention a fascinating study which appeared in the British medical journal Lancet earlier this month. This study was prompted by the observation that people of South Asian (mainly Indian and Pakistani) origin living in developed countries have begun to experience an epidemic of heart disease. The risk is greatest among affluent urban dwellers. The increase in heart disease in this population is hard to explain, since many of these people are vegetarians and do not have the usual cardiac risk factors, such as high cholesterol rates.

In the Lancet study, one thousand South Asians who had heart disease or were at high risk for it were put on one of two diets. The control group received an Indian version of the standard "prudent diet" advocated by the American Heart Association. The other group was taught how to enhance this same diet by incorporating elements of the Mediterranean diet. This created a new hybrid called the "Indo-Mediterranean diet," which featured an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, walnuts and almonds, and other sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Cooking fat was consumed in the form of soy or mustard seed oil, not cholesterol - rich products. This "Indo - Mediterranean diet" was naturally high in many antioxidants.

After two years, the results were dramatic. In those consuming the Indo-Mediterranean diet, the average intake of ALA doubled, while the incidence of heart disease was halved. For instance, the incidence of heart failure was 7 percent in the control group, but only 2.2 percent in the Indo-Mediterranean group. The risk of stroke fell from 2.6 to 1.4 percent, while the rate of total cardiovascular events dropped from 19 to 10 percent. Interestingly, this diet worked even for those who had already had a previous heart attack, suggesting that it could help prevent second heart attacks or strokes. Best of all, the diet could easily be adapted for people all over the world, not just those of Indian origin. The foods involved can be produced by most farmers at a cost of about one US dollar per day. But the payoff is enormous.
