The ancient Greeks had an interesting common goal: "To die young as late in life as possible." Their vision makes us stop and think. Unfortunately, today most of us grow old and ill before our time. We neglect our bodies for too long, and in the end pay the heavy penalty of early mortality.

But health, if properly maintained, can last a lifetime. So it's vital to learn as much as we can about the subject, then work to increase our chances of a long and healthy life.


THE CELL:

Let's start with the stuff of which we're all made. The cell is the basic unit of all living matter. Human cells are so tiny that millions of them may be found in a half-inch cube of body tissue, yet they contain everything necessary to the survival of life in an ever-changing world.

The average cell has a thin outer wall or membrane which serves as a "living filter," keeping the cell contents in and undesirable material out while permitting passage of proper nutrients and wastes.

The cell wall surrounds a semi-fluid substance called cytoplasm, in which the life activities of the cell take place. At the heart of the cell is the nucleus, a control center that carries the cell's hereditary material. Within the cell, sausage-shaped particles called mitochondria generate, store, and supply energy on demand.

As the basic building-blocks of an organism, cells combine to form tissues, which are organized into the body's systems - nervous, endocrine (glands), reproductive, skeletal, muscular, skin, and immune systems. But it all begins - and ends - with the single cell.

Each cell in your body (population: trillions) needs it's share of nutrients every day. The cells assimilate these nutrients and use them as fuel for energy or as material for the production of body chemicals and tissues.


ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS:

There are five known groups of essential nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

Fats and carbohydrates furnish most of the calories the body needs, and are the primary sources of fuel for the body's heat and energy. Proteins are responsible for the growth and repair of the body itself.


THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS:

Most minerals are involved in the activation of enzymes and vitamins, creating a healthy environment in which the body can grow, function and heal itself.

While vitamins can be synthesized by animals and plants, minerals must be supplied entirely by the environment. In other words, how much mineral is in a plant (and gets passed on to the human who eats it) depends on how much mineral is in the soil that the plant grew in.

So it's almost impossible to determine if you are getting sufficient minerals even if you are eating the right foods.
