"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease."
- Thomas Edison

It's Time for Women to Wake Up - Hormone Treatments Cause Cancer
The debate continues to rage over the ethics and safety of steroid hormone treatment for women. The medical community staunchly justifies its use of the two main carcinogenic synthetic hormone drugs estrogen and progestins. Please note that synthetic progestins ARE NOT natural progesterone. However, the mounting evidence revealing their disastrous side-effects is irrefutable.
A major scientific study recently sent shock waves threw the news wires. On March 21 the Journal of the American Medical Association announced a study of over 211,000 women which showed that with ten years of estrogen use the risk of fatal ovarian cancer doubled. And this risk continues for the next 29 years!!! The news stories tried to keep an air of calm. Women were exhorted "not to panic". The experts explained that, "After all, ovarian cancer is still a rather rare form of cancer."
Then, less than a week later, on March 26th, a study by the National Cancer Institute had more shocking findings. The latest results, reported at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research found that for women taking estrogen alone, the risk of ovarian cancer starts to rise after as little as four years of treatment. The data showed that women who used it for at least four years but less than 10 were at significantly increased risk!
Various medical experts in the field were trotted out to comment and defend the widespread use of estrogen. The same age old catch 22 dilemma was discussed; each woman must make there difficult decision by weighing the risks and benefits. Why must it be breast cancer or crumbling bones? Do we really need to choose between a stroke or heart disease? How absurd to think in these terms. How immoral to make women believe that they have to make such a choice. Women do not have to pit the toxic effects of hormone drugs against compromised health. (If you haven't already read all of my research found in my Women's Wisdom Collection, found at http://www.ssellman.com then I strongly encourage you to do so. It reveals all the myths about menopause, bone loss, heart disease, estrogen and much more.)
The most important point about the use of estrogen and progestins was entirely missed. These are two drugs that have been acknowledged by the U.S. government to be known carcinogenic substances. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has included them in their list of known carcinogens. There has been ample evidence proving that they initiate and promote breast, uterine, cervical, lung, brain, skin and colon cancers. Much less toxic drugs are regularly pulled off the market for far less serious health offences. Why is it then that estrogens and progestins not only continue to be heavily promoted but also enthusiastically championed by doctors?
The wisdom of the female body has endowed women to remain healthy and fit all the days of their lives. Menopause is not the price that must be paid for being a woman. Nature has provided dozens of proven, effective and safe ways to balance hormones, regrow bone, and repair and maintain the heart without ever having to take one toxic drug to do so. Menopause is not a disease. It does not require toxic, carcinogenic steroid hormone treatments.
As I listened to the media interviews between various camps of the medical world, not one "expert" ever questioned the most basic assumption, "Why do women need to use these toxic drugs in the first place"? As long as "the medical experts" remain imprisoned within the traditional medical paradigm that extols the use of drugs and procedures that excel in suppressing symptoms. They will be forever blind to the many safe and effective natural options that are presently available to heal all of women's hormonal health challenges.
For women to become truly hormonally balanced, they must embrace a more holistic approach to their health care. Only ignorance fuels fear. Only ignorance allows healthy women to be prescribed these cancer causing hormone treatments. The more informed women become about their bodies and the many other choices available to them, the less they will be under the spell of medicine's mass marketing of menopause and its dangerous drug treatments.
BALANCING THE OUTER AND THE INNER
When it comes to assessing all the factors that contribute not only to hormonal discord but all disease states, stress gets the honor of being right there at the top of the list. Stress has many causes which include unresolved emotional wounds, relationship difficulties, long work hours, financial worries, over-achieving habits or the super-mom syndrome, the long term effects of stress can be devastating to the physical, emotional, and mental well being of women.
Chronic stress causes chronically elevated levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, resulting in weight gain (especially around the mid section), blood sugar imbalances, thinning skin, muscle wasting, memory loss, high blood pressure, dizziness, hot flashes, excessive facial hair, and other masculinizing tendencies.
Overworked adrenals will eventually crash leading to adrenal exhaustion and the inability to make adequate levels of adrenal hormones. Symptoms of overtaxed adrenals include extreme fatigue such as in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, irritability, inability to concentrate, frustration, insomnia, addictions to either sweet or salty foods, allergies, nervousness, depression, PMS sensitivity to cold, diabetes and headaches. Chronic low blood pressure is also a key symptom of adrenal exhaustion.
Adrenal exhaustion creates havoc with the entire endocrine system. Many hormonal imbalances in women of all ages are caused by over worked adrenal glands. Nutrients that have special importance to the adrenal glands are the B vitamins ( especially B5), vitamin C, proteins, magnesium, manganese, zinc, potassium, plant enzymes, adrenal extracts, and the amino acids, tyrosine and phenylanoline. (more on this subject in future issues).
Without slackening the pace, no amount of nutritional support will heal the adrenals. While it may be difficult to take large chunks of time of out of daily routine to have that much needed afternoon nap. There are some very simple yet effective ways to increase relaxation and healing for the body and the spirit.
The demands, obligations, and commitments of our daily life move us thorough our day in a blur of activities. It's like being on a conveyor belt of ceaseless doingness. In the hubbub of life, a little voice inside seems to be yelling. 'Stop the world ! I want to be heard!".
Taking a break from life, as it turns out, it a really healthy thing to do. Since the number one hormone disrupter is stress (not to mention an accelerator of aging), getting some down time is a must for every woman. While a week long retreat at some luxurious health Spa would be grand idea, you don't need to pack your bags to reverse the stress in your life. It only requires an effortless journey inwards.
The ancient recipe for a healthy, happy life found in all religious and cultural traditions throughout time is the need to withdraw one's attention from outer -world activities and place awareness inwards. Prayer, contemplation and meditations are all means to return to the stillness within, a limitless reservoir of inner strengths and resources. A time to recharge the spiritual batteries and allow healing energy to flow.
A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that people with an "intrinsically motivated religious faith were more able to cope with changes in their physical health and living circumstances. "The participants' authentic spiritual connection helped them to recover from depression. Moving inwards is the key to nurture your authentic spiritual connection.
Scientific studies now abound proving what wise elders have always known. The power of prayer and inner contemplation is a great healing force. Quieting the mind or becoming absorbed in prayerful thoughts has a most profound effect on the body. Even taking just a few brief moments rescued from the daily whirlwind to savor an uplifting thought can contribute to balancing the body and calming chaotic hormones.
Prayer or meditation comes in many forms. It can be a favorite passage from the bible, an inspiring piece of music, a bestowed mantra or a daily affirmation. It can be found by unwinding in a scented bubble bath, ambling along a forest track or enrolling in a yoga class. There are many ways to reclaim that place within where peace, inner-strength and wisdom reside. As women, it is vital that we reserve a space in our busy lives to honor the voice of our inner wisdom and inner healing on a daily basis. We deserve to take time for ourselves!! It is not a luxury but a necessity.
Since I made the commitment to add a daily time of reflection and meditation to my life, I have found a steadily growing sense of inner peace. Often, a solution to a nagging problem or a creative idea will bubble up into my awareness. Sometimes I have strong impulse to give someone a call or to follow up an intuitive hunch. Whenever I act upon such inner urging's, the greater purpose reveals itself.
There is always time , even in the busiest of lives, to take a few minutes out of each day to calm the mind and focus our awareness on uplifting thoughts. This will help the adrenals to heal, the hormones to be balanced ,the emotions to be on a more even keel and the spirit to blossom. Find the inward path that works best for you and then make a habit of moving inwards daily .
EXPLORING THE HORMONE HERESY: AN INTERVIEW WITH WOMEN'S HEALTH ADVOCATE SHERRILL SELLMAN
The controversies surrounding estrogen therapy are heating up, and they are of particular importance to women with thyroid disease, who frequently suffer from imbalances in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. In this fascinating interview with cutting edge women's health advocate and author Sherrill Sellman, you'll find out why you may want to rethink the standard hormone replacement therapy model most doctors promote, and instead consider a new, more natural approach. No woman with thyroid disease who is considering hormone replacement therapy or approaching menopause should miss this exclusive interview.
THE FAST FOOD NATION
The profound connection between diet and health is obvious. Or is it? As the average meal preparation time in the US is less that 5 minutes and 90% of the weekly shopping budget is spent on processed foods, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with the very foundation of our health mentality. The really scary statistics of increasing obesity, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, arthritis, auto-immunity diseases etc. is a testament that something is very rotten in Western countries.
I recently read a most compelling book, called the "Fast Food Nation" by journalist Eric Schlosser. It brilliantly explained and explored one of the blights to the growing incidence of poor physical and mental health, deteriorating public health standards, exploitation of workers, pollution of the land and the extermination of the small farmer. The problem: the fast food industry!
Below is an Excerpt from The Fast Food Nation. It graphically reveals one of the very sobering effects of the fast food world. Please take the time to read it and the following links, as well. We don't need to be held hostage through lack of awareness.
"Liquid Candy" a 1999 study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest describes who is not benefiting from the beverage industry's latest marketing efforts: the nation's children. In 1978, the typical teenage boy in the United States drank about seven ounces of soda every day; today he drinks nearly three times that amount, deriving 9 percent of his daily caloric intake from soft drinks. Soda consumption among teen aged girls has doubled within the same period, reaching an average of twelve ounces a day. A significant number of teenage boys are now drinking five or more cans of soda every day. Each can contains the equivalent of about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper also contain caffeine. These sodas provide empty calories and have replaced far more nutritious beverages in the American diet. Excessive soda consumption in childhood can lead to calcium deficiencies and a greater likelihood of bone fractures........Soft drink consumption has also become commonplace among American toddlers. About one-fifth of the nation's one and two year olds now drink soda. "In one of me most despicable marketing gambits," Michael Jacobson, the author of "Liquid Candy" report, "Pepsi, Dr. Pepper and Seven-Up encourage feeding soft drinks to babies by licensing their logos to a major maker of baby bottles, Munchkin Bottling, Inc. A 1997 study published in the Journal of Dentistry for Children found that many infants were indeed being fed in those bottles.

Since I receive constant requests for help from women seeking guidance in their quest for hormonal health, I have been inspired to create the HormoneWise Program, a personal hormone coaching program. As a mind-body psychotherapist, holistic health counselor, stress management teacher as well as researcher, I have investigated, studied, counseled and personally incorporated many life style, behavioral, dietary, nutritional and spiritual changes into my life. The results have been profound for me. In the past, it would have been a whole lot easier to regain my health and sanity if I had a trusted guide to assist me. I learned the hard way that hormonal balance is not just about supplementing hormones. Far from it. It's about a commitment to make positive changes in one's life and to weed out the habits that contribute to the hormonal teeter- totter.
Below is information about my one-on-one HormoneWise Program.

Hormonal balance is vital. Every aspect of a woman's being - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually is affected by the flow of hormones throughout her life. Tampering with a woman's hormones is tampering with the very heart and soul of who she is.
