"In mammals subjected to prolonged toxic effects, antibodies do not protect the organism from infection. This is based on data indicating that small mercury concentrations predispose the organism to influenza (1964). Prolonged exposure of mammals (white mice) to low mercury concentrations (0.008 - 0.02 mg/m3) leads to a significant increase in the susceptibility of mice to pathological influenza virus strains. This is shown by a decrease in the Ld50 and a more severe course of infection. In the experimental group more mice died (86 - 90.3%), than in the unexposed animals (60.2 - 68%), additionally the experimental group died more quickly. A "universal" flu vaccine under development is based on the finding that people who have more virus-killing immune cells, known as CD8 T cells, either don't get sick or experience only mild flu symptoms.

While a vaccine can be used to stimulate the production of CD8 T cells, previous research shows that vitamin D is also known to have a direct immune-modulating effect on CD8 T cells.

Robert Edgar Hope-Simpson was one of the first to discover the link between a deficiency in solar radiation and seasonal influenza. Then, in 2006, the journal Epidemiology and Infection5 published Dr. John Cannell's paper "Epidemic Influenza and Vitamin D,"6 which presents the hypothesis that influenza is little more than a symptom of vitamin D deficiency.

The fact of the matter is that if your immune system is operating optimally, your chances of contracting a cold or flu-like illness or influenza are very slim. Vitamin D is an important player in overall healthy immune function, but it's also an effective antimicrobial agent in its own right, producing 200 to 300 different antimicrobial peptides in your body that kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. So optimizing your vitamin D levels will help combat viruses in more ways than one.

A half teaspoon full of Bicarbonate of Soda is in a glass of cold water, and repeated if necessary in one or two hours, will often ward off a cold in its early stages. In addition a hot Soda Bath is very beneficial. Use half pound to one pound of Bicarbonate of Soda in as hot a bath as can be borne. Remain immersed in the water for about fifteen minutes. It is important to go to bed at once after this bath in order to avoid exposure.

A bath taken in this way causes the Alkali to penetrate the system and is a material aid to the human system in throwing off the germs of Grippe. "In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the 'Flu' with the U.S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely anyone who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks. I have since that time treated all cases of 'Cold,' Influenza and La Gripe by first giving generous doses of Bicarbonate of Soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated."

During the first day take six doses of half teaspoonful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water, at about two hour intervals. During the second day take four doses of half teaspoonful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water, at the same intervals. During the third day take two doses of half teaspoonful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water morning and evening, and thereafter half teaspoonful in glass of cool water each morning until cold is cured.

Flu season is fast approaching. The "authorities" would have everyone lining up for a flu shot even though the vaccine is literally a crapshoot. Experts guess in advance which viral strain will be making its worldly rounds and if they guess wrong, there may be no protection at all from the vaccine.

Furthermore, you are never warned about the significant dangers of all the preservatives and/or heavy metals in the vaccine.  Big drug company profits hinge on selling the patented pharmaceutical vaccines. But you don't hear anything about all of the published data showing adverse reactions to the vaccine. Many people who get the shot become ill.

You're also never told that the vaccine may not work at all if you have sub-optimal nutrition. If, due to your inadequate nutritional status, you do not mount an ideal antibody response the the vaccine, what is the point? Why risk the shot? This could explain why so many vaccinated people develop the disease anyway.

Are there legitimate ways to naturally boost your resistance to the influenza virus? Sure there are, but you'll never hear about them, because no drug company stands to profit by letting you find out about them. But in the case of influenza, they may very well save your life!

Published in FASEB Journal in June 2001 is a landmark article on the impact of the trace mineral selenium on the influenza virus. Researchers divided mice into two groups, one well fed and nourished with ample selenium and a control group made selenium deficient. They made a startling finding, which they said has implications for humans, as the same effect is likely to occur in us. Not only were the malnourished mice sicker than the controls, but the mild virus (influenza A Bangkok) to which they were exposed mutated to more virulent (dangerous) forms. And worse, this action may contribute to new outbreaks of not just flu but many viral diseases, from the common cold to AIDS and Ebola.

A key researcher reported that once the mutations have occurred, even nutritionally sound animals became susceptible to the newly mutant strain. While the study focused on influenza, which leads to over 100,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S. alone, it also studied the mutation of Cocksakie B3, linked to a heart disease called Keshan disease. Areas of China have soils very poor in selenium. Not only have those areas been at great risk for rapid premature aging and degenerative diseases due to this deficiency, but they were also at risk for heart infection. Supplements have largely eradicated the disease, according to researchers.

The Archives of Internal Medicine (April 12, 1999) reported on the impact of trace elements on immunity and infections in elderly patients. Their objective was to determine the effects of supplementation with zinc and selenium (trace minerals) compared to a second experimental group supplemented with beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E (all vitamins), and a third control group receiving only a placebo. The study found that after nutritional deficiencies were corrected (taking six months) the mineral supplemented group not only had fewer viral infections compared to BOTH other groups, but also had a higher antibody response to influenza vaccine when administered.

But influenza is not the only viral infection you have to worry about this time of year. The common cold is caused by a virus, too. And here, vitamin C plays a big role in reducing the severity of symptoms. Guess what? It works for the flu, too. A number of studies involving subjects under heavy acute physical stress, show that vitamin C decreases common cold incidences by half. At least three controlled studies have shown an 80 percent reduction in the incidence of pneumonia among vitamin C users. In one large study of 700 students, vitamin C at an initial dose of 1,000 mg per hour for the first six hours followed by 3,000 mg each day thereafter, reduced cold and flu symptoms by 85 percent.

Folks, these reports reveal some explosive information. First, it appears that all of us are placed at risk due to the poor nutritional status of our neighbors and society at large. The poor nutritional status of individuals and populations appears to contribute to increasing virulence and spread of viruses, contributing to epidemics. Unfortunately, we do not hear public health and government authorities educating us about this monumental information. Large scale immune risks that can be corrected safely and inexpensively with non-patentable nutritional supplements do not seem to be newsworthy. Your government and medical community would rather push vaccinations on people, when the simple truth is their immune response may be inadequate due to improper nutrition.

Selenium is an absolutely mandatory participant in the most important glutathione pathway of metabolism, perhaps the body's greatest detoxifier, antioxidant, and booster of immune response. In fact, AIDS victims are found very deficient in glutathione and when levels are raised, their symptoms recede or can be prevented. It is found in meat, grains such as wheat and rice, but my favorite source of readily bioavailable selenium is nutritional yeast. I sprinkle an abundant amount of this very nutritionally rich food on my salad every night. You can find it at most grocery stores.

Selenium is such a valuable mineral, I personally believe everyone should take a small supplement of it. Excellent studies have shown enormous protection and prevention of various cancers including prostate cancer in men. While too much selenium can be toxic, I have never seen 200 mcg daily of selomethionine cause any problems.

Zinc (up to 30 mg daily) is another required mineral for proper immune function. In fact, years ago, a University of California Davis study demonstrated that making rats deficient in zinc led to an immune deficiency in the offspring, which persisted for four generations even when the zinc was replenished in the offspring! Thus, not only do we likely place our friends at risk of promoting epidemics by maintaining poor nutritional status, we may very well be creating lifelong immune problems for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren because we failed to take care of ourselves.

Instead of pushing mass vaccination on the population with its many unknown risks, it makes much more sense to educate and inform people of the many basic common sense steps they can take to actually improve immune function. The rationale for mass vaccination is herd immunity, that is, if enough people become immune through vaccination, the disease will have a much less chance of propagating. I wonder why immunity to most every infectious disease that could be attained through nutritional supplementation isn't promoted (hint: $$)?

Action to take: Whenever you can, shop organic to maximize the nutritional value of your meals. Eat a wide array of deeply colored fruits and vegetables every day. Shoot for five to nine half-cup servings a day of various fruits and veggies. Cut out the added sugar in your diet, sugar weakens your resistance to viruses and bacteria.

Because the diet is never perfect I take supplements every day. I suggest you take a good multi-vitamin mineral that provides at least 500 mg of vitamin C and 50 to 75 mg of all the B vitamins, 10,000 units of beta carotene and 5,000 to 10,000 units of vitamin A. Be sure it provides 200 mcg selenium and 15-30 mg zinc. If your multi does not provide vitamin A, take a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day. Add an extra gram or two of vitamin C each day to help you avoid infection. If you do find yourself feeling a bid under the weather, rest, get plenty of fluids, and take an extra 3,000 mg of vitamin C the first day. Dear Reader,

Amid all the dire reports about flu vaccines running low, you'll rarely see a TV reporter point out (I assume because it wasn't in the drug company press release) that your defense against the flu is only as strong as the state of your immune system. Get all the flu shots you like (if only they had them); if your immune system isn't prepared, you'll still be vulnerable to the flu.

But what if you take every step necessary to strengthen your immune system, and then still come down with a nasty bug? Fortunately, some of the treatments that can help you stay well can also help you bounce back when you're laid low.

First response

During this season that puts us in contact with so many people while socializing or shopping, it's inevitable that many are going to come down with the flu or one of those other viruses that cause colds and digestive "bugs" that are so easily passed around.

With that in mind, I called on HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., to ask him about three natural antibiotics that he told us about in the e-Alert "Be Afraid...  Be Very Afraid - Part II" (10/17/02). I wondered if these three natural agents (vitamin C, grapefruit seed extract, and olive leaf extract) might also help provide protection against the flu or be useful as treatments once the flu has set in. His response: "In my opinion, absolutely! Since I don't take the flu shot myself, these are my main armamentarium."

When I asked about recommended dosages for anyone who feels like they may be coming down with something, Dr. Spreen told me that at the fist sign of aches, sore throat, cough or any other symptoms of flu (or cold, or other infections), he starts with a "hit" of several thousand milligrams of vitamin C, and then follows that with 1000 mg (one gram) every hour until symptoms recede.

Sometimes the vitamin C alone will do the trick, but when more is needed, olive leaf extract (OLE) and/or grapefruit seed extract (GSE) may be added or used alone. Dr. Spreen explained, "OLE is the simplest to work with, as its concentration is not a problem. 500-1000 milligrams every few hours is what I do, with or without the C, depending on the situation (I'm usually a 'shotgunner' when getting well fast is an issue). Normally, for straight oral use, the C and OLE are a great pair by themselves (the OLE lowers the needed amount of vitamin C, which can get into very high amounts for a serious flu attack)."

Calling in the reserves

As for grapefruit seed extract, Dr. Spreen recommends taking it in capsule form, using the suggested dosage on the label. He adds, "The full-strength liquid GSE is bitter beyond comprehension, and must be diluted. The advantage of GSE is that there are different forms available, such as throat spray, ear drops, topical, etc. Bio/chem Research in California, has done extensive research on the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties of this amazing substance."

I asked Dr. Spreen if he would add any other natural therapies to what he calls "my big three," and he said there is one, but it's not a preventive agent against the flu. He said, "I'd add some acidophilus culture (also called probiotics) to the mix, during and for a few days after the use of OLE. The situation here is that OLE is such a good antibacterial that it can also kill the 'good guy' bacteria that we need in our gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. A capsule or so of acidophilus before meals should be adequate insurance for keeping these beneficial organisms established."

When enzymes attack

And apparently another natural agent that helps with digestion just might help fight the flu as well.

In last week's e-Alert "Chew On This" (12/4/03), I told you about a new enzyme formula called Proteolytic Enzymes, a full-spectrum systemic enzyme formula developed by HSI Panelist Jon Barron. This week Jon sent me an e-mail with this message: "As it turns out, among everything else they do, proteolytic enzymes may also help with the flu."

Jon included an article from Infinity2 Nutrition in which the authors state that when the proteolytic potential is raised in the blood it provides an efficient therapy as well as prevention of viral infection. According to the authors, "Successful inhibition of infection has been accomplished in many different viruses including six different influenza type A viruses."

.. and another thing

FDA officials are apparently not content to have jurisdiction over the regulation of drugs in the U.S. Now they're trying to tell Canada what to do.

FDA commissioner Mark McClellan made a trip to Canada last month to persuade officials to lift prescription drug price controls and put an end to cross-border sales. His reasoning: The U.S. foots the bill for quite a bit of drug research, which has lead to the development of many of the most popular drugs.

This argument would hold water, of course, if in addition to funding research, the U.S. government also manufactured and distributed drugs. Add to that, Canada's Patent Act already gives extra patent protection as well as financial incentives to drug companies that develop new drugs.

The situation was put into perspective by a spokesman for the Canadian International Pharmacy Association who told Canada's National Post "What's the job of the FDA? The FDA's responsibility is patient safety. They should not be commenting on profit margins or research costs." And he added, "They're heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical industry and I think they're stepping outside their bounds."

So it appears that Commissioner McLellan's "suggestions" weren't exactly greeted with open arms. But he didn't leave Canada empty-handed. Something called a "memorandum of understanding" was agreed upon, which is intended to improve information exchange between the U.S. and Canada. In other words, Canada sent the commish packing with an invitation to call and say hello anytime.

If only we could get the same amount of input from them here.

Warning! Flu Shots Can Be Dangerous To Your Health

Every year about this time doctors around the world are recommending that people go in and get their annual flu shot. What most people don't know or understand is just how dangerous this could be, especially for children under the age of 12. When people call and say "My doctor is telling the family to go in and get a flu shot. Should I do it?"...I tell them they should learn about the side effects and decide for a chiropractor and naturopathic physician I don't' have the time or energy to argue with family practitioners or family doctors who are obviously uneducated on the possible side effects or detrimental effects flu shots or vaccinations in general can have on the body.

I personally have never received a flu shot and have never been ill during the flu season. In my personal opinion I don't think toxic chemicals and strains of different viruses growing on living tissue belong inside the body. Because of the demand, I want to share with you some of the research that we have found in the latest flu shot trend and the by-products of these supposedly sterile and non-harmful solutions.

I don't know about you, but I sure would not want any of the following compounds in my bloodstream or deposited in my body. Let's look at what we have found in the common vaccinations:

Ethylene Glycol: Ethylene Glycol is nothing more than the technical name for anti-freeze, the same stuff that you put inside your car engine. I don't think I have to tell you what would happen if you ingest antifreeze.

Thimerosal: This is a mercury derived disinfectant and preservative which is used in a majority of the vaccinations and can result in brain injury over a long period of time leading into Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease, lack of memory, sluggish brain performance and also is known to induce auto-immune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ALS as well as altering and depleting the immune system from working efficiently.

Phenol: Phenol is most commonly used as a disinfectant, also used as a dye, is listened as a carcinogenic agent (cancer-causing) agent and is also known as carbolic acid.

Neomycin and Streptomycin: These compounds are used as antibiotics which have side effects to include severe allergic reactions in some people. It always puzzled me why they are putting two different forms of antibiotics in a viral vaccine.

Aluminum: Aluminum accumulates in the skin, bones, brain and kidneys and can cause Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Aluminum has also caused cancer in laboratory mice. It is commonly used as an additive in most vaccinations.

Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is used as a preservative. It is also classified as a carcinogenic (cancer-causing agent) and causes the body fluids to become acidic in nature. Formaldehyde will start to preserve your tissues within the body.

I hope that when your doctor starts telling you that it is time for your annual flu vaccine you will present this material to him and ask him how all of these ingredients are going to prevent you from getting the flu. I'll be very interested in knowing what his answer is to that question. As a side note just to let you know what is being injected to your body, these vaccines are strained through animal or human tissues like chicken embryos, monkey kidney tissue and embryonic guinea pig cells, to name a few.

So what am I supposed to do if I don't listen to my doctor and I decide not to get an annual flu shot? Well, you have probably made the smartest decision you have ever made in your entire life. So let me give you 5 Simple Secrets and Bonuses to Sailing Through The Flu Season:

Secret #1: Reduce your intake of caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages and replace with purified water with addition of organic apple cider vinegar added. Two tablespoons per gallon or a capful per glass. Ideally, you should drink at least gallon of water each day.

Secret #2: Reduce intake of refined white sugar, white flour, sweets, refined grains and hydrogenated oils. Try not to over-eat, especially during the holidays. Try to get adequate exercise - at least 3 times per week. The more you move, the better your lymph system is able to move toxic materials out of the body.

Secret #3: Zinc. In a majority of the studies that have been done during the flu season many people have prevented the flu by taking supplements of zinc. Zinc is one of the most powerful immune stimulants and is powerful anti-viral. There are a lot of different forms of zinc and you have to be careful on which one you choose. Therefore I recommend the best and most absorbable form of zinc which is zinc orotate. After 42 years as an owner in the NFL, Art Modell was supposed to be honored at the Ravens last home game of the regular season. It also could have been his last game as their owner. A record crowd showed up to watch the Ravens take on the Steelers, and to thank the man that brought football back to Baltimore after 12 long years. But while a new attendance record was set at M&T Bank Stadium on that historic day, one fan was notably missing. Art Modell was home with the flu.

You might have heard there's a flu going around?

With all the hype out there, you would think the flu vaccine was a cure or at least a treatment for the dreaded disease, but that isn't the case at all of course. In fact, the optimal months to get a flu shot are well past. So at this point, it's time to start thinking about what to do if you should come down with the flu so you won't get sidelined like Art.

In the e-Alert "The Big 3" (12/11/03), I told you about several natural agents you can use to help your body's immune system fight off a viral invader. Today I'll tell you about another natural treatment that has been shown to cut the duration of the flu in half.

The natural medicine chest

For hundreds of years in Europe and North America, the elderberry has been used to treat many ailments, from asthma to bronchitis, as well as stomach and urinary tract problems. In fact Hippocrates, the Greek "father of medicine," called the elderberry tree his "medicine chest."

Elderberries and elderberry juice have also long been used as treatments for the common cold and influenza. Knowing this, Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, a prominent Israeli virologist, isolated compounds in black elderberry that disable the protein that viruses use to infect healthy cells. From this research, Dr. Mumcuoglu developed an elderberry extract called Sambucol, which many of you probably heard about last year from William Campbell Douglass, M.D., in his Daily Dose e-letter.

Now, a recent study (to be published in an upcoming issue of The Journal of International Medical Research) has demonstrated the effectiveness of Sambucol in easing the symptoms and shortening the duration of the flu.

More than 50 patients diagnosed with type A flu, and six patients with type B flu, were enrolled in the study conducted by researchers at the University of Oslo School of Medicine in Norway. At the onset of flu symptoms, subjects were given either one tablespoon of Sambucol or a placebo four times a day for five days. The patients who received Sambucol were considered recovered from the flu in 3.1 days, on average, while those in the placebo group recovered in 7.1 days, on average.

These results confirm the findings of a 1993 study conducted on patients during a flu outbreak in Israel. As reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, almost 90 percent of the subjects in that study who took Sambucol daily recovered from flu symptoms within three days. Those in the placebo group took six or more days to recover.

More than treatment alone?

Several of the reports about Sambucol have stressed the fact that neither Sambucol nor black elderberry has been tested as a preventive against the flu. But a 2001 laboratory study at the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel, showed that in addition to having antiviral properties, Sambucol activated the immune response by increasing the production of inflammatory cytokine - the proteins that regulate the immune system.

So even though no trials can yet confirm Sambucol's use as a preventive agent, the Hadassah University researchers theorized that Sambucol, "could also have an immunoprotective or immunostimulatory effect when administered to cancer or AIDS patients in conjunction with chemotherapeutic or other treatments."

Obviously, much more research will be required to demonstrate Sambucol's effectiveness in the prevention of influenza and other diseases. But until then, the evidence of its ability to quickly relieve flu symptoms continues to increase.

Looking for a good motivator? I'll give you two.

If you've resolved to get more exercise this year, here are two points that might help you keep on track.

Point One:

A study from Northwestern University that followed the exercise habits of more than 4,400 men and women for up to 15 years found that those who remained fit were far less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure; two conditions that often lead to a variety of health problems and chronic diseases.

The results of this study are not surprising, of course. But I was impressed by a comment from the lead researcher of the study, Dr. Mercedes Carnethon, who singled out this important point for BBC News: "The development of risk factors for heart disease and stroke isn't just the natural result of aging."

Exactly so. None of the infirmities that so many regard as "just part of getting older" should be thought of as inevitable. With balanced nutrition and regular exercise, poor health is not an inevitable part of aging.

Point Two:

In an American Heart Association (AHA) review of more than 40 studies on the effects of exercise on heart health, researchers concluded that heart disease can be prevented and blood pressure can be lowered with regular exercise.

Again, this is no surprise. But the report on the study offered an insight into the fact that most doctors are trained to simply treat heart problems, not prevent them. So their first reaction will likely be to reach for the prescription pad and to talk to you about exercise second (if at all).

One of the AHA members who participated in the study slyly noted that, when talking to physicians, drug sales representatives don't talk about exercise instead of drugs, even though the review shows that exercise often works just as well as drugs to address heart issues. So it's up to each of us to keep in mind how heavily influenced some doctors can be by information they receive from the big pharmas when deciding what, if any, treatment to take.

When it comes to exercise, we're on our own. But I know from experience that it's always helpful when you have motivators that can persuade you to stay the course. And for me, knowing that it's another way to avoid the prescription pad is great motivation.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Colds and Flu

From what we have read, hydrogen peroxide works quite well and is supposed to be effective 80% of the time, especially if done when the symptoms first appear. While it seems contrary to what we have been taught about colds and flu we know quite a few people who have tried it with great success.

In 1928 Richard Simmons, M.D. hypothesized that colds and flu virus enter through the ear canal. His findings were dismissed by the medical community. According to Dr. Simmons, contrary to what you may think or have been taught about how you catch the flu or the cold there is only one way that you can catch the two, and that's via the ear canal not through the eyes or nose or mouth as most have believed.

Keeping your fingers out of your ears will greatly reduce your chances of catching them, but then again these two are microscopic and can be air-born and may land on or even in your ear. Once they have entered the inner-ear (middle-ear) there they begin their breeding process, and from there they have access to every avenue throughout our body to travel to and to infect and make us sick.

In 1938 German researchers had great success using hydrogen peroxide in dealing with colds and the flu. Their data has been ignored for over 60 years.

It is important to begin treatment as soon as symptoms appear. If treatment is started promptly effectiveness seems to be in the 80% range.

We have found remarkable results in curing the flu & cold within 12 to 14 hours when administering a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) into each infected ear, (sometimes only one ear is infected) The H2O2 starts working within 2 to 3 minutes in killing the flu or cold; there will be some bubbling and in some cases mild stinging occurs.

Wait until the bubbling & stinging subside (usually 5 to 10 min) then drain onto tissue and repeat other ear. A bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in 3% solution is available at any drug store for a couple of dollars.

Although this method is perfectly safe for infant/children to use, the loud bubbling and stinging frightens them, they'll need someone they trust to put the hp in their ears. (don't get h2o2 in the eyes- if you do, flush with water)

Thanks to one of your articles in your newsletter about using peroxide in the ears for flu or colds, my family and I have had a relatively flu/cold free winter! We have been exposed to a serious flu in our area, but have managed to dodge it. Here are some specifics:

My 6 year old son had kept me up during one night with coughing and sneezing. By noon the next day he had a fever. I then remembered recently reading in your newsletter about using three drops of peroxide in each ear for 10 minutes. You should have seen his face when I told him I was going to put peroxide in his ears! He was nervous, but soon settled down. It bubbled a lot in both ears. I did only one treatment in each ear, and from then on, his fever went away and his symptoms were reduced to the sniffles. That night he slept well, as did mom. The cold did not return!

Next came myself. About a week later I felt like my head was in a "fog", a familiar fog that is a sure sign I am going to get sick with a bad cold or flu. I used the peroxide treatment in each ear and went to bed about an hour early. The next morning I felt fantastic! Not a trace of illness.

Again about a week after I had felt something coming on, my husband started feeling "ugh". I told him about the peroxide and he looked at me skeptically. But he tried it. And it worked! He works for the school district in the bus shop and is around the drivers (who are around all those kids passing germs about) frequently.

At the same time my 10 year old son who is rarely sick said he didn't feel well. I wasn't sure if he was saying that because he felt left out (the peroxide treatment aroused his interest), or if he really was coming down with something. So, I gave him a treatment, not seeing that any harm would come of it. He had strong bubbling on one side. He soon felt better and did not become ill.

The peroxide has been used a few other times on all of us with almost amazing results. There was a different result in one case, which had to do with myself. It had been a couple of weeks from my first use of the peroxide on myself.

I came home from our local library book sale which was held in the basement. I quickly became ill, as if allergic to something in the basement, of which this was my first time down there. By the next morning I had a full fledged cold and felt awful. I tried the peroxide.

Although I had to repeat the peroxide treatment about every 4 hours, the peroxide alone relieved my symptoms! I was a bit tired, but other than that, no sneezing, coughing, fever, etc. After about 4 hours I would feel pressure building in my head (especially the ears) and I would begin to get quite cranky. Then I would use the peroxide again and be much better.

The peroxide allowed me to maintain my schedule of homeschooling the boys and doing my chores. It worked better than anything I have tried over the years and had no side affects!

A few notes: the peroxide feels like ice when it is dropped into the ear! It usually did not sting. The hardest thing for me to get used to was the tickling of the bubbles!

Thank you again for the information on peroxide for flus and colds. This wife and mom has had many peaceful nights thanks to you! Thank you also for ALL the fantastic information that you pass along in your newsletter. If it weren't for you, how would we know of these things?!?

How to Protect Yourself Against the Flu Without Vaccination

While the media is sure to continue hyping the bird flu, I'd like to remind you that a healthy immune system is your best and primary defense against any viral threat. Following these simple guidelines will help you keep your immune system in optimal working order so that you're far less likely to acquire the infection to begin with.

  • Optimize your vitamin D levels. As I've previously reported, optimizing your vitamin D levels is one of the absolute best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds. This is probably the single most important and least expensive action you can take. I would STRONGLY urge you to have your vitamin D level monitored to confirm your levels are therapeutic at 50-70 ng/ml year-round.
    An inexpensive option to get your vitamin D levels checked on a regular basis is to join the GrassrootsHealth D*action Project.
  • Avoid Sugar and Processed Foods. Sugar decreases the function of your immune system almost immediately. Be aware that sugar is present in foods you may not suspect, like ketchup and fruit juice.
  • Get Enough Rest. Just like it becomes harder for you to get your daily tasks done if you're tired, if your body is overly fatigued it will be harder for it to fight the flu. Be sure to check out my article Guide to a Good Night's Sleep for some great tips to help you get quality rest.
  • Have Effective Tools to Address Stress. We all face some stress every day, but if stress becomes overwhelming then your body will be less able to fight off the flu and other illness. If you feel that stress is taking a toll on your health, consider using an energy psychology tool such as the Emotional Freedom Technique, which is remarkably effective in relieving stress associated with all kinds of events, from work to family to trauma.
  • Exercise. When you exercise, you increase your circulation and your blood flow throughout your body. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which means your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads.
  • Take a Good Source of Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats. Increase your intake of healthy and essential fats like the omega-3 found in krill oil, which is crucial for maintaining health. It is also vitally important to avoid damaged omega-6 oils that are trans fats and in processed foods as it will seriously damage your immune response.
  • Wash Your Hands. Washing your hands will decrease your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. Be sure you don't use antibacterial soap for this -- antibacterial soaps are completely unnecessary, and they cause far more harm than good. Instead, identify a simple chemical-free soap that you can switch your family to.
  • Use Natural Antibiotics. Examples include colloidal silver, oil of oregano, and garlic. These work like broad-spectrum antibiotics against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in your body. And unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, they do not appear to lead to resistance.
  • Avoid Hospitals. I'd recommend avoiding hospitals unless you're having an emergency, as hospitals are prime breeding grounds for infections of all kinds and could be one of the likeliest places you could be exposed to any new bug. Also keep in mind that virtually all vaccinations will LOWER your immune system (this is the main job of the vaccine adjuvants), NOT make it stronger!
